Why I don't get involved in extensive, tangled online discussions: a case study
When the method that we use to determine the norms of a community is conflict, then only that subset of the members who can effectively survive the process end up deciding the rules.  The mechanisms that emerge frequently require one to be able to spend enormous amounts of time and undivided attention picking through complex, nuanced and angry arguments, at speed and under fire.  After all, everyone who lasted long enough to agree them has that skillset in common.  That's how they got there.

This is why I like web moderation.  The point is to build a conversation where a thick skin and infinite free time are not required to participate, where...

Aw, nuts, the five year old just barfed all over her bed.

I keep forgetting to tell you how much I love and admire you, ma'am.

And to say that I'm still trying to vacuum baking soda out of the rug where the larger of my spawn barfed on it a week ago yesterday.

The feeling is mutual; I always enjoy seeing you on Making Light.

I should have done something clever with baking soda when a complete bedding change didn't eliminate the smell. Instead I sprayed a little of my perfume in the air; she finds the fragrance comforting.

Ikea, by the way, sells really wonderful mattress protectors. 'Nuff said.

No, she was sick the night after the day after her birthday. Equally importantly, we still have 36 hours clear for her to get better before the party. But she's staying home from school tomorrow for sure.

Being the parent of a small child does tend to improve the sense of proportion.

Or it kills you; one of the two.

It never kills you. You just wish it did. Then they grow up, and you long for the days when they looked up to you.
